Class 5

English

This term we have been reading 'Monster in the Woods' by David Shelton as part of D.E.A.R time and have used this as the basis for our writing. So far, we have written a letter of complaint about a noise coming from the woods and a character description of a monster. Next, we're going to be writing a chapter of a story about a girl who meets the monster in the woods in the horror genre. Later this half term, we will be writing superhero stories, instructions and Christmas poetry.

Maths

We have started the year with recapping the basics of place value and addition and subtraction. We are now looking at multiplication and division, including factors and multiples, prime numbers, squared and cube numbers, and multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000. After, we will be moving onto our first fractions unit of the year, learning how to add and subtract them.

For extra practice on our times tables, we can use Times Table Rockstars or Hit the Button (www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button). Please ask Miss Dylak if you've forgotten your TTRS login.

R.E.

Our current RE topic is 'God's Covenants' where we will learn about the special promises God made with people on Earth such as Noah, Abraham and Moses.

Science

We are continuing our work on properties and changes of materials in science this half term. We have completed lots of experiments already, and there are more to come - including investigating reversible and irreversible changes. Before Christmas, we will start our next unit on Earth and Space, where we will learn about all of the planets in the solar system and the relationship between the sun, moon and Earth.

History

We are currently learning about the Aztecs in History. So far, we have found out about Aztec warriors and how they expanded their empire. Next, we will be learning about religion in Aztec times and what happened in the ceremonies they conducted. We will start our topic on The Tudors before Christmas, by outlining the family tree and lines of succession, including the famous King Henry VIII.

Geography

We are currently learning how to use grid references to read maps and find some key places local to us. We will next study ocean currents and what causes them. We will look at how the ‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’ was formed in part due to ocean currents and will begin to look at how ocean currents affect the climate around the world.

Art

During Autumn term we are studying the Pop Art movement across the UK and USA. We have learnt the names of some famous British and American pop artists and have already created some artwork in the style of Andy Warhol. We are now going to study Roy Lichtenstein and plan and create artwork in his style.

Design and Technology

This term our unit is 'Bread'. We have evaluated how different types of bread have different features and have investigated how things like water temperature and proof temperature affect the bake. We are going to make some bread rolls as a group, then we will design and make our own white bread just before Christmas.

Music

We are continuing our weekly singing sessions with Mr Rodriguez from the Diocese of Leeds Music team. Our singing sounds fantastic – Miss Dylak is so impressed with the progress we’ve already made since the start of September! In Class, we have been learning about rock music and learning to sing and play 'Livin on a Prayer' by Bon Jovi using the glockenspiels.

French

This term we have been learning about our vegetables. We are working really hard on our pronunciation when speaking aloud.

Computing

We are currently learning about computer systems and how search engines work. Our next unit will be on video production and editing.
