"Children’s chances of success are maximised if they develop deep and lasting understanding of mathematical procedures and concepts." NCETM 2025
Intent
We want our children to enjoy and succeed in Mathematics at St Matthew's Catholic Primary School. We intend for our pupils to ‘master’ mathematics, with robust fluency skills that support them in their ability to reason and problem solve. ‘Teaching for mastery’ encompasses a method of teaching and of classroom practice, that supports our learners to achieve their best. Our aim is to ensure a deep and secure understanding of the core principles that allows our children to make connections and seek patterns.
We deliver daily practice tailored towards The NCETM 'Five Big Ideas' of coherence, representation and structure, mathematical thinking, fluency and variation. We enhance our teaching through the use of the White Rose Maths materials, tailored to each year group. We ensure that the curriculum design is coherent and sequenced and is supported by carefully selected additional materials.
