Class 5

English

This half term we will be writing a narrative story based on 'Oliver Twist' by Charles Dickens to link with our Victorians unit in History. We are then going to write some Earth poetry to celebrate Earth day using the 'Our Earth is a Poem' anthology as a writing stimulus. We will finish this half term by beginning to write a discussion piece about deforestation in the Amazon, as an introduction to our Geography unit after the half term: South America.

We will continue reading and exploring a range of texts during our Guided Reading lessons.

Maths

We will start our half term by briefly learning about presenting data in line graphs and tables, and then we will move on to classifying, calculating and measuring angles.

For extra practice on times tables, Times Table Rockstars or Hit the Button (www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button) is available to access on devices. Please ask Miss Dylak if you've forgotten your TTRS login and need a copy of it. If you are struggling to gain internet access, written and oral practice is very beneficial, or Miss Dylak can print off some extra resources on request.

R.E.

Our current RE topic is 'Life in the Risen Christ' where we will learn about Jesus' Resurrection, how He and the Holy Spirit are always present with us, and different ways of praying.

Science

This half term we are learning Plants and Living things. During this unit, we will find out about how plants reproduce sexually and asexually, what metamorphosis is and how the life cycles of amphibians, reptiles and insects are similar and different.

History

We are learning about the Victorians in our History lessons. We will find out how lives differed between the rich and the poor, what life was like in Victorian factories and what the impact of the Industrial Revolution was on rural and urban settlements.

Geography

In Geography, our next unit is 'North America'. We will use geographical language to describe where the continent is located and use our prior learning to explain what climate zones can be found there. We will learn about the major rivers in North America and the population density of cities in North America.

Art

Throughout all of the Summer term our unit is 'Art and Fashion'. We will look at artists who have inspired fashion trends, 'Op' art, and design a range of clothes in different styles and for different occasions.

Design and Technology

This term our unit is 'Food Throughout the Year'. We will learn about how food is seasonal and use this knowledge to create seasonal menus. We will also explore the link between food and celebration in different cultures.

Music

We are continuing our weekly singing sessions with Mr Rodriguez from the Diocese of Leeds Music team. In Class, we will be listening to and appraising jazz music.

Spanish / MFL

We are continuing with our introduction to Spanish. We have already learnt the numbers, days of the week and month, and colours. We will continue to learn some basic vocabulary and basic phrases to use in conversation.

Computing

We will be completing a unit on programming where we will use the laptops and programming tools called 'Crumbles' to ultimately create and programme a working carousel which moves and lights up.
